Roller Coaster

The emotional roller coaster that is my mother’s death is starting to get to me.  All last week, we were waiting for her death at any time.  My brother and some of his family were coming on Friday so we kept thinking she was waiting for them.  They arrived Friday night late and she woke up and talked to them.  It was a miracle.

After sleeping all day Saturday and Saturday night, she woke up Sunday morning and requested steak and mashed potatoes.  She wanted to try and stand up.  She hasn’t stood up since July.  Before we could get her anything to eat, she fell asleep and stayed asleep until this morning.

Today she requested bacon and eggs, coffee and juice.  She actually ate them.  Then requested a TV show.  She’s been asleep some, but later wanted a muffin, which she requested by asking me to throw it to her.

I don’t know how much longer I can keep this up.

They say that people will often have a surge of energy before death, request a favorite meal when they haven’t eaten in days, etc.  So I was prepared for her death after yesterday’s surge.  Now I’m just stumped.  Maybe this was the surge.  Maybe she’s rallying again.  I guess we won’t know until we know.
